A survey on knowledge and perceptions regarding head lice on a sample of teachers and students in primary schools of north and south of Italy.

2009

High rates of pediculosis are found in every part of the world. The age-range most affected is between 3 and 12 years. No-nit policies are ineffective in preventing infestations. On the other hand, misdiagnosis and overuse of pediculicides, increase resistance to treatment. Lack of information leads people to consider this kind of infestation to be associated to low social classes and immigrants. This research has been implemented to find out about the information level on pediculosis on a sample of students (722) and teachers (408) of some primary schools in northern and southern Italy, and to highlight the role of personal aspects such as age, gender, cultural level, geographical position…

TAKING A LOOK AT CHINESE PEDAGOGY IN SHUXUE [MATHEMATICS]: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN CULTURES TO APPROACH ARITHMETIC AT FIRST AND SECOND ITALIAN PRIMARY CLA…

2013

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two cases of task design about straws and word problems in different cultural traditions (the Eastern and Western one). By means of two paradigmatic examples developed in Italy, we aim at showing, on the one hand, the effects and advantages of intercultural dialogue and, on the other hand, the need to take into account and to respect culturally rooted pedagogies, avoiding uncritical transfer from one culture to another. This perspective implies a reciprocal respect of the different approach modalities and hence a continuous back and forth between the practical and the deeply related theoretical dimension

Comparing Traditional Pedagogical Approches in Science to Inquiry Based Ones: A Case Study with Pre-Service Primary School Teachers

2016

In this contribution we discuss a teaching/learning experiment focused on comparing traditional teaching/learning methods to the IBSE approaches in the framework of pre-service primary school teacher education. We discuss the main phases of the pedagogical activities developed during a physics education course in the framework of the undergraduate course for pre-service primary school teacher education at the University of Palermo (Italy). In this course, the students first produced examples of pedagogical paths based on a traditional, pedagogical laboratory-based approach. Then, after a workshop focused on IBSE and on how to plan IBSE-optimized activities, the students were asked to produc…

Many national and international studies have concentrated on the evaluation and promotion of the inclusive qualities of schools. It is a complex issue which has led to wide debate and a variety of contributions which in turn highlight the need for a tool capable of measuring the inclusive quality of our schools in order to determine the empirical evidence regarding this topic. This article presents the results of an experiment in drafting a questionnaire in order to measure the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by its pupils. The questionnaire is intended as an evaluation and selfevaluation tool that enables the inclusive quality generated by the context to be measured as it is perceived by pupils. At the same time the tool allows reflection processes amongst teachers to be promoted so that they can implement educational activities which contribute to the planning and control of inclusive teaching practices. This contribution puts forward an original tool for measuring the inclusive quality of the school system perceived by pupils attending primary school in several Sicilian towns. It was administered in its definitive version to a sample of 1652 children. The psychometric properties of the tool and the significance it can hold in the areas of planning in research and of educational design are presented in this paper.Settore M-PED/03 - Didattica E Pedagogia Speciale

DEVELOPMENT OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE CONTEXT OF DUAL CAREER

2020

The concept of dual careers is based on the principles of the Olympic Charter with harmony of the mind and body at its core. Contemporary education systems are goal-oriented and neglect their responsibility to aid in the personal development of students. The role of sports is not sufficiently emphasized in the educational process. In order to draw attention to these issues, the author has initiated a dual career development project ‘Sports class’ with the financial support of Cēsis Municipality. The project launched on September 1, 2019. The study population was grade 7a of Cēsis Secondary School enrolled in extra physical education classes. To attain the main aim of dual career of combinin…

Parents' causal attributions concerning their children's academic achievement

2007

Katja Natale seurasi väitöstutkimuksessaan vanhempien lastensa koulumenestystä koskevien kausaaliattribuutioiden eli syyselitysten muotoutumista lasten siirtyessä esikoulusta kouluun. Hän tutki kuinka tärkeinä vanhemmat pitivät kykyä, yrityksen määrää, tehtävien vaikeustasoa ja lapsen saamaa ohjausta selittämässä lasten onnistumista ja epäonnistumista koulussa. - Koulunsa aloittavien lasten vanhempia voisi neuvoa viestimään lapsilleen, että heillä on kykyjä onnistua haastavissakin koulutehtävissä. Tällainen viesti vaikuttaa positiivisesti lasten koulutaitojen kehitykseen ja minäkuvan muuttumiseen realistisemmaksi, Natale suosittaa.Onnistuminen kyvykkyyttä, epäonnistuminen yrityksen puutetta…

Self-efficacy and enjoyment of physical activity in children: factorial validity of two pictorial scales.

2019

BackgroundSelf-efficacy and enjoyment are two main constructs proposed within many motivational theories in any human endeavor, sport and physical activity included.MethodsThe purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of two pictorial scales measuring self-efficacy and enjoyment levels in a sample of 14,035 Italian schoolchildren (7,075 boys and 6,960 girls, 6- to 7-year-olds). An important feature of the two scales is that they are in a pictorial format in order to prompt a straightforward understanding in children. The whole sample was randomly split in two subsamples according to gender and age and the factor structure of the measures was examined across subsamples.Result…

Parents' math-gender stereotypes, children's self-perception of ability, and children's appraisal of parents' evaluations in 6-year-olds

2015

Abstract This study investigated for the first time the relations between parents' math–gender stereotypes, parents' evaluations of children's math ability, children's math ability self-perception, and children's appraisal of parents' evaluations, addressing 253 Italian children as young as 6 years of age, their mothers, fathers, and teachers. Novel results revealed the specific role of mothers' math–gender stereotypes in relation to daughters, but not sons: Mothers' math–gender stereotypes predicted girls' math self-perception which, in turn, predicted girls' appraisal of both mothers' and fathers' evaluations of their ability. Importantly, children's appraisal of parents' evaluations was …
